Slaughter has been one of my favorite bands, and it was a thrill when they helped me get a start in music photography. I try very hard not to abuse any connections I make with a band or their individual members, and I like to think that’s why trust me. Trust can lead to extras once in a while, as happened when I decided to make a trip to CO to visit family and catch a Slaughter show. When I requested a photo pass from the band, I got an email back asking when I was getting to town because they were taping a TV show and would get me an invite if I would be there. I couldn’t pass that up, so I made sure I’d be there!
The show was Disaster House, a show on the DIY channel where they came up with unusual ways to demonstrate mundane disasters that can happen in your home. This episode was all about the electrical system. Slaughter was there giving a concert at a “house party” and ended up blowing all the fuses. Not only did I get permission to watch the taping, but I got permission to photograph it as well! It was a fascinating experience, since I had never seen the taping of a TV show, but also because I got to see the band in a different environment. Besides the “concert”, they also did an interview with the host and a photo shoot. I did my best to stay out of the way and stay quiet. It made for a fun set of photos and a memorable day. I don’t think I’ve had that much fun at any regular show since, and I can’t thank the band enough for allowing me to be a part of it.
