Well, Death Metal really isn’t my favorite style of music, but I had an opportunity to photograph Devin Townsend, so I decided to go. There was also something oddly appealing about seeing this type of music performed in what used to be a church. That’s just my sick mind working!
I missed the first act, and my apologies to them, but I have forgotten their name. Septic Flesh was up next. Honestly, I can’t say that I liked them much. Again, it just isn’t the kind of thing that I like to listen to. To each his own, but to me, all of their songs sounded alike. And it would be nice if at least some of the words were intelligible. But the place was packed, so obviously some folks like this stuff.
Since there were so many people on the floor, I decided to go up to the balcony when Devin Townsend came on. I have not been to this particular venue before, but it was horribly dark. Some of that, no doubt was because of the style of music. Unfortunately, for the first three songs, I could barely see the performers on stage, and if I can’t see it, chances are it won’t photograph well. These are the only photographs I felt were worth sharing. But, I have to say that Devin Townsend was entertaining. The music still wasn’t my style, but Devin obviously enjoys what he is doing and loves playing to the crowd. He also has a sense of humor and doesn’t take what he does too seriously. That makes for an enjoyable performance.
I was not able to get a photo pass for Children of Bodom, but I’m guessing it wouldn’t have mattered much anyway. Being the headliner, the lighting may have been a bit better, but I decided leave before they came on. It was getting unbearably hot, especially in the balcony. Note to Mr. Small’s... you may want to think about installing some big fans to help alleviate the heat. We’ll see what happens the next time I have a chance to go to a show here.
